Updated 3 min read11 steps

Categories and brands group your products so shoppers can browse and filter your store. Each one gets its own page in your shop, and a category can have sub-categories under it.

Before you start

  • Anyone with View products can see the Categories and Brands lists.
  • Adding, editing and deleting needs Add & edit products.

Steps: add a category

7 steps · ~5 min

  1. Step 1

Go to Inventory → Catalog → Categories and click Add.
  2. Step 2

Enter a Name. Leave URL empty and StoreLine makes the web address from the name.
  3. Step 3

To make it a sub-category, choose its Parent category. Leave it empty for a top-level category.
  4. Step 4

Optional: add a Description. It is shown on the category's page in your shop, under the products.
  5. Step 5

Optional: under Image, click Choose image (PNG, JPG or WebP, up to 5 MB). The image uploads when you save.
  6. Step 6

Under Visibility, keep Active on. Turn on Featured to show the category in your home page's featured categories.
  7. Step 7

    Click Save.

Sub-categories are listed under their parent. Click the arrow next to a category, or Expand all, to see them. The Products column counts the products in the category and all its sub-categories.

SEO and shipping for a category

Open SEO in the category form to set:

  • Google product category: helps Facebook, Instagram and Google ads reach the right shoppers. A sub-category left empty uses its parent's choice.
  • SEO title (up to 70 characters) and Meta description (up to 200 characters): what search engines show for the category's page. Left blank, they use the category name and description.

Under Shipping, a shipping class sets the delivery charge for the category's products. Sub-categories without their own class use the parent's.

What your store shows

  • Active categories and brands appear in your shop's filters. Turning Active off hides one from your store.
  • Each category and brand has its own shop page, for example /shop?category=shoes. Its description is shown under the products.
  • The home page's Featured Categories section shows the categories you pick in it. If you pick none, it shows the categories marked Featured, and if none are featured, all your top-level categories.
  • The home page's Brand Strip section shows the brands you pick in it. If you pick none, it shows every active brand that has a logo.
  • If you change a URL later, old links keep working and redirect to the new address.

The default category

Every store has one default category, called Uncategorized at first and marked Default. Products with no other category are kept in it. You can rename it, but you can't delete it or put it under another category. It is never shown on your store.
